Privacy Policy
Gnomon collects nothing about you. This page explains what that means in practice, and the one case where information leaves your phone.
The short version. No accounts. No analytics. No advertising. No tracking. No data sent to us, because there is no server to send it to. Everything the app calculates, it calculates on your device.
What we collect
Nothing. Gnomon has no user accounts, no analytics framework, no crash reporting service, no advertising identifiers and no third-party SDKs of any kind. We do not receive any information about you or your use of the app.
Your location
If you tap Use current location, Gnomon asks iOS for your position and uses it to work out where the sun is where you are standing. That calculation happens entirely on your phone.
Your location is not transmitted anywhere. It is not stored except as the place you last looked at, which is kept on the device so the app opens where you left it. Deleting the app removes it.
Location is also used, when available, to reference the compass and the camera overlay to true north rather than magnetic north. If you decline location access, the app falls back to magnetic north and continues to work.
Place search
This is the one case where information leaves your phone. When you search for a city or place, the text you type is sent to Apple Maps to look up matching locations. That request is handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy, not ours — we never see it, and it carries no identifier we have created.
If you never use the search field, nothing ever leaves the device.
The camera
The camera overlay draws the sun's and moon's tracks over the live view. Nothing from the camera is recorded, saved, or transmitted. The image exists only on screen while you are looking at it. Gnomon does not request photo library access at all.
Motion sensors
The compass and the camera overlay read the device's motion and heading sensors to work out which way the phone is pointing. These readings are used on screen and immediately discarded.
What is stored on your device
- The places you have saved, including any skyline you have drawn for them
- Which place you last had open
This is stored by the app on your phone. It is not backed up to any service of ours, and deleting Gnomon deletes it.
Children
Gnomon is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Gnomon changes what it does with information, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date below will change.
